As my copy of DoW 3 is unpacking on steam, I just wanted to take the time and say something.
TLDR; Thank you Relic so much for coming back to this universe and breathing some life back into it. It means a lot to us... WAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!
The Dawn of War series is a series I've been playing since I first saw an advert of it, on the Syfy channel and begged my dad to buy it for me. Was way under the age limit ya see. After witnessing the first glorious opening cinematic to the game, I knew I had been taken to a universe filled with Passion, Bad Assery and Pure Unadulterated Grim Dark. From then on, I was hooked.
DoW 1 gave me insight into a different style of RTS (my main RTS games were StarCraft 1 and Red Alert 2) and I fell in love with the different play style of the various armies, the magnitude of units to try out and my god the sound effects and voice work was just so awesome. It really helped solidify the theme and style of the game and even the universe to me. What I mean by this is I had only kinda played (I gave space marines 4 separate arms, attached to their torso, made from Ork arms...) the table top when I was a kid and didn't really get the universe. So with the audible narrative direction that Relic had set, it helped me fall in love with the universe even more so. "It was a momentary madness"
DoW 2, I experienced when I was at university first time round, and man I just thought it was a ballsy move on Relic's part to ditch big armies and base building (controversial I know), and I loved it! The co-op campaign is one of the best co-op experiences I've ever had through my years of gaming. Even rivaling close to Halo 3 co-op I might say. The change of focus to a Diablo-esque loot system and the breaking down of the essential mechanics to 1. Use Cover Wisely and 2. You can cater your Hero of choice, load out and skillz. These mechanics helped me really get into the new design direction of the game and especially for point 2, made me replay the campaign, again and again, to test out and see what Weapon and Armour combinations worked with my chosen heroes and their newly appointed, different skillz, that had been previously done in the preceding campaign. Ranged Thaddeus is somehow good and watching Tarkus taking on the Avatar of Khaine in melee, is truly a sight to see. Because he LITERALLY CANNOT DIE!
This series have given me so many cherished gaming memories through it's co-op campaign, it's incredible multiplayer in DoW 1 (Me and a few friends to this day still try to beat 4 insane difficulty Necrons... On Dark Crusade) and the absolutely bloody glorious Last Stand! Thank you Relic so much for making this game a reality for the fans and enabling us to step into your vision of the world, one more time.
You guys are awesome!
