Seriously, what's the point of it being limited this way still? I checked the options and cannot see any way to make it otherwise. Its almost like you are saying that the models aren't good enough for the zoom-in, and yet they look very good. Its not like asking for the observer mode, which takes a lot more effort. So far my only disappointment with the game.

I agree with this.

Do you mean rotation? Pretty sure they said during a stream that they didn't develop environments to be viewed from 360 degrees to cut costs.

There were supposedly console commands to unlock the camera, anyone know what those were? Knowledge transfer would be nice!
Voidness
It seems they locked out the console. I can't get it to open in the retail version!

The locked camera and absence of key binding boggles the mind.

Well, a friend who's into modding scene, he's also a member here, said to me last night that Relic modeled a lot of objects just partially and that they probably won't be able to enable cam rotation without redoing assets... Oh well, something to be hyped for the first expansion...
KommandantKavu
I don't think rotation is important in an RTS personally.. Never made use of it in any competitive way... But zoom in and out certainly is.
Renner
I only want it for the eye-candy, hardly it ever made usage in some competitive way. Ever since I played their games full 360 degree camera was always a feature. If someone told me their next game will be without it, especially after seeing rotatable scenes in the first gameplay trailer, I would hardly believe it. It pains me to see that they cut costs on it, but eh, the game is still good, tho. I hope it will make a return some day because I really like making nice screens out of their games, especially with nice environments of which DoW3 is full.
KommandantKavu
I understand, that makes sense.
I'm actually impressed with how much crap goes on on the screen that my game runs as nice and responsive as it does. (Except for when a player lags..) Unit movement and abilities seem to function nicely.
It's possible having more range for 'zoom-in' and 'zoom-out' may affect that, and the same could possible be said for rotation and real-time rendering. I know there are common tricks in the industry with FPS games of rendering only things that are visible to the user, but I don't think that can be done here.
I imagine saving production costs is part, but pushing performance numbers is another.
Renner
Hah, now ancient CoH1 still has huge performance hits when I angle the camera to look in the distance, at least on this FX CPU I'll still use for the couple of days more. Interestingly, I finished the mission 14 today, and in that scene when Solaria was dropping from the orbit, and the camera was showing the map and buildings behind her, the performance jumped through the roof, lol. But nothing really happened behind so...
Its also stupid that the zoom-in is at the SC2 levels, at very least they could allow that. Still, the hope lives it will make a return.

Odd question, but does anybody know if Player 1 and Player 2 cameras have the same viewpoint, i.e they are both looking north? Im assuming they do but havent seen it confirmed anywhere.
Someone mentioned above that a lot of the assets are probably '1 sided' to reduce processing demand, the only problem with this is if youre at all interested in making your own maps, if you want to add any level changes the whole map has to cascade downwards from the back (high at the back, low at the front) which is pretty limiting and probably explains a lot of the multiplayer map designs in the game. .
hi by the way, first post and all that.
