As the title indicates, I have been hugely critical of this game, and very vocal of my criticisms. This was all rooted in the fact that DoW3 was not the DoW game I expected or wanted. But due to Relic's pedigree I felt obligated to give it a chance, as Relic has made some of the greatest RTS games of all time.
And the Beta changed my mind.
Is DoW3 perfect? NO. Far from it. I think that removing cover was a huge mistake, and there are aesthetic things that really irritate me (Gabe's hammer flip, strobe light Lascannons). But those things are overshadowed by all of the things this game does right. Its not just a good game, but a ++heresy redacted++ good game. During the Beta, I found myself wanting to play it more and more.
The progression system in particular is, IMO, brilliant. The Elites and Doctrines are the biggest selling point for me, and I absolutely love this system. Its something Ive always wanted in an RTS. The gameplay feels fun and rewarding, and I love that losing a single big engagement is not game ending. The economy is balanced around making comebacks possible, and the focus on map control that is a staple of DoW is no less present in DoW3.
Overall, the more I played the game, the more I liked it. So kudos to Relic for delivering a great game once again, and doing something new. Ive ordered the CE, and hope it comes sometime before the actual 41st millenium. But thats a whole different can of worms.
