I'd say the most important thing to do is to familiarize yourself with the - many - unit and elite abilities in this game (doctrines too!). With this knowledge, you will be able to anticipate your opponents tactics and micro and fight back without falling into traps or powerful combos.
In turn, you should try to utilize each unit's abilities as well as you can (throwing DA grenades to stop melee charge, ASM jump to escape, Stikkbombs, Tact Flamer.... this list goes on), as smart and effective use of them will greatly enhance your army's power beyond the simple A-move.
For example, Jonah is often best used to screen units from melee blobs. If they charge in, you can press E (make a wall) and then your Q/W abilities become enhanced to make short work of anything that was caught in the barrier.

i posted a quick guide on unit grouping on this thread. it's pretty comprehensive:

----- (repost)
so this is how control-grouping works in DOW3.
select units -> press ctrl + number key -> units are added to that group, and reordered in the bottom unit bar to reflect their group.
ctrl+A -> selects all units on the screen
Press Tab to cycle through each different special ability in the group. Also Tab will select the individual model in the group for individual ordering. Pressing the number key for the entire group will then allow you to issue orders for the whole group.
Tips:
Group ranged and melee in group 1 (ranged and melee) and group 2 (melee). when ambushed or adjusting battle strategy it's easier to issue to all units and move melee in and out of the battle.
Tab cycle to throw grenades. that will throw the individual grenade for one squad, rather than throwing all grenades if you have the whole group selected (i think this is correct, someone can correct me if wrong).
Groups will always place your elite command menu on the screen first when selecting multiple squads and elites.
Tab select an individual squad to move it into a better position. You can also select damaged units from the bottom unit bar, which is sorted by ctrl-grouping, and then move it into a safer location once selected.
some additional control group commands i find helpful:
shift + click squad will select squads of the same type and highlight them. you can add them to a specific control group this way.
ctrl + click will add or remove an individual squad from your highlighted group.

Just play the game vs. live players and train your micro. Don't mind losing, you'll learn eventually.
