Most people suggest avoiding building any gens in 1v1 at all because breaking even time is about 8 mins, but some 1v1 matches can drag on for pretty long time, so by Esc 2 and t2 I'm bleeding dry. It's hard to anticipate whether match will be long or short, so if enemy have several gens down and we fight on even footing, he is usually at bigger advantage later on and I get snowballed.
What should I do in these circumstances? When is the best time to get gens and which ones exactly?
From my personal observations, getting 2-3 req gens in the beginning didn't really hurt my early game but gave me considerable boost later on. Though still would like to know how it works for others.

Building gens is necessary, what ppl advice against is UPGRADING the generator points.

I see, thx. Still hard to figure out when and what to buy. Doing it on demand, but really unsure about it being most effective. Guess I gotta watch some more relays.

Depends on you BO. In 1vs1, if you open with 2xASM or 2xScout+ASM+LP you cannot build early power gens (they will screw your timing). If you open with tacts + armory + flamers it's the other way round, you need at the very least 1 early power gen for the early flamers. After the opening, it's up to the game and the enemy. Overall I think you need 2req+2power gens, then go full power, rebuilding as few req gens as you can get away with.

I open with (sometimes x1 Tac drop pod), x2 ASM, and around 3-5 Scouts > Armory for early Power Swords to bash gens and harass, so I need lots of req and some energy influx as well. x2 Req ASAP proven itself pretty useful, but power gens screws me over sometimes, especially if I do not manage to kill enemy Gen early on.

Seconded. Something Ive forgotten to do :P Also agree that it depends on BO. Tac squads need the armory to be effective with the flamer/plasma choice. Default they're just not good. For the armory you need that genny as I'm sure you've noticed in your games but upgrading them does little in t1 other than waste your resources

What I assume the OP is referring to are recent posts like those by Koof, an Ork player, who advises against building gens, but his advice is totally wrong. Hes using a specific ork build with specific doctrines that allows for such low eco of not building gens and it applies specifically for his one build even though he was giving general advise. Many other "high level" players said yeah follow this guy hes so right, but it seemed more a "oh this guy I know made a post, #like" then reading his post and agreeing entirely as many of those players don't follow his advice at all.
