What started off as an simple suggestion to bring back the Imperial Thought of the day derailed into my opinion on the story and what we could do from here.
For when I think of DoWIII's story, I think of the missed opportunity they had in the villain of Kyre, and the idea of a Khaine artifact.
I read Path of the Eldar, and I felt that the fluff writer here had not. If he had, he'd seen great opportunity for really making a xenos artifact of Khaine (from back when he was a whole God) pop out. Of course, we'd still need reason for Macha to disband from Kyre, so perhaps we could've played up the idea of an Eldari daemon prince (what a new idea) at the very least, threatening to cause permanent taint to Biel Tan's infinity circuit if it's set loose.
If you read the post I linked in the first sentence, I claim that the key thinking missing here is a good villain to really tie the narrative together. We need a villain, and it must NOT be related to Khorne.
So right now, I'm thinking about Necrons, and the tropes behind them.

I'm also trying to think of some good Necron novels that might help whoever is principally in charge of writing the fluff for the next campaign. If Necrons can have personality, then I'm really crossing my fingers for a Necron we can really enjoy dealing with (maybe even alleviate him to the status of recurring character).
So, given what we have, any ideas?

well there is certain part of certain inquisitors body that requires massage from certain ... no .. YOU GOT CHAPLAIN DIOMEDES
aside from that classic DoW story evolution ... lets kill orks, then eldar appear, lets kill them all and summon demon, lets kill demon and it will revive necron
I think they missed this campaign big time, some mission could be made into one bigger instead of several smaller and there is so much interesting smaller parts they stopped instead if expanding ... whole varlock plot, inquisitor, small eldar civil war, khaines artifact, waagh, necrons, demons ... it doesnt feel that you had cool story and dlc will continue, it feels like that cool story simply ended before it started and you are going to pay for actually finishing it
maybe the inquisitor was good idea, you could send in IG/AdMech/SoB with GKnights, dreadknights and inquisitors as elites and instead of being scared of some heretical space marines you could simply send in bunch of ork snipers to take care of everything
maybe gorgutz instead of hiding could arrive with his whole waagh army from previous DoW

That depends- are you thinking Oldcrons or Newcrons? The former doesn't have any more personality beyond "creepy omnicidal undead robots", so it would need to be Newcrons. Sadly, they've never gotten any real novels to themselves, it's always either as an antagonist or in a supporting role somehow.
On the other hand, the old games used Oldcron fluff so it might cause some inconsistency there.

Ok. So what do we have on Necrons for DoW?
Lorn V, Kronus, Karavua II, and now, Acheron.
If the Newcrons were linked to any of these, what would they want?
What do Newcrons want when they're being threatening? It's hard to say.
