There are a lot of players do talk about the Building Strategy in DOW3 and I have some opinion about it.
First, let's begin with the Building's Functions in RTS genre.
[I] Unlock Tech Tree and Research Tech.
[II] Providing Resource(Like LOTR：BFME's farm or House in AOE2) and Adjust Resource(Like the market in AOE2).
[III] Production and Reinforcement Facility.(To build army, workers.)
[IV] Recycle(Like it in RA2).
[V] Repair(Like it in RA2).
[VI] Defense(Active Defense - Turret and Passive Defense - Wall.)
[VII] Attack (Like those super weapon facility).
[VIII] Scout(Like radar tower).
[IX] Camouflage(Like the invisible tower in RA2).
[X] Cheating Enemy (Like the GLA Fake Buildings in C&C Generals).
[XI] Transport (Like those in UAW - those "Electric Poles" or in SC2 - nydus worm or in C&C：Generals - underground passage).
[XII] Providing "Buffs" - like increasing unit's attack or healing units.
[XIII] Traps - like in Paraworld.
Second, there are a lot of Building Strategies can be discuss, but I choose to talk those be mentioned by DOW3 forum's member for now.
[I] There is no "BackDoor" to destroy Enemy's Production/Tech Facility.
A. I think the point is not the BackDoor, but is to destroy Enemy's Production/Tech Facility and then to delay Rival's Army reinforcement or Tech upgrade.
B. Let's check it out in every DOW game.
(a) DOW1 - Players can place their Important Buildings in their Safe Zone and place some Turrets and Mines to protect that and players have little incentives to place their important buildings at front lines. So, basically it's hard to destroy enemy's Important Buildings(Barrack, Armory, and Power Generator.......) in DOW1's High Level match.
(b) DOW2 - According to the Victory Condition and only one HQ and Turrets. It's very hard to destroy enemy's Important Buildings.
(c) DOW3 - There are incentives to encourage players to place their Barracks at front lines, but also players still can place their important buildings in the Safe Zone to prevent enemy's attack.
C. The strategy focus are different in every DOW game.
(a) DOW1 - It's complicated that players can choose one or many Victory Condition to a match. So, the design make it can be destroyed but not that easy.
(b) DOW2 - VP is the main Victory Condition(VC) mode, so the design is prevent players' HQ got rush and destroy.
(c) DOW3 - Power Core is the main VC mode, so the design is prevent players' Power Core got rush, but can be destroyed later.
D. The point of destroying Enemy's Production/Tech Facility.
(a) DOW1 -
Honestly, I check all the 1 vs 1 map in DOW1 and then I find that most of SP are nearby players' HQ and there are small amount SP(Like Relic Point and Critical Point at the middle of map) in many maps and it will encourage players use the Control Area or Take and Hold VC to win not use the Annihilate VC to win.
Yes, to destroy enemy's Production Facility can delay the army production, but it's hard to do it and does less effect to enemy, because most(About 38%) of SP are nearby HOME and then it's more easy to defense.
And don't forget players can reinforce their army at any place and research some upgrades at any place, so the effect of destroy enemy's Production Facility does less effect.
(b) DOW2 -
It's hard to destroy Enemy's Production/Tech Facility, so I think there is not much problem of it.
(c) DOW3 -
In DOW3, the front line reinforcement is very important, because：
One. units can not reinforce at any place now.
Two. the VC is to destroy the Power Core.
Three. there are less SP in DOW3 and it means if players lose the middle map control and then it's give enemy to increase the advantage.
E. Note -
Players still can destroy enemy's production/tech facility under enemy's eye in DOW3. It requires a great micro-management and you get not much reward.
Why don't players to take out those FHQ? It's more easier and has more reward and have the same function of it.
Honestly, I doubt that players will most of build buildings at home, because according to the meta, it does encourage players to place their buildings at front lines. Therefore, it would be the situation that is players have a lot of opportunities to take out those FHQ, but not to go into enemy's home to take out those buildings.(except the armory I will place at home.)
To be continued........
