Every time I see someone come on these forums and point out how DoW III has less people in it than Company of Heroes 2 I cringe. First of all Company of Heroes 2 is not the same franchise to compare it to that series which is definitely the gem of Relic's collection (though homeworld has a special place in my heart) is not a fair. So instead let us look at the numbers compared to the other two games in the franchise that "people are returning to". These numbers indicate that across all of the expansions of both games combined there are still more people in DoW 3. I am by no means saying that the numbers for DoW 3 are good, but merely that you should compare the numbers to what they should be compared with. Which VERY gradually have been climbing or holding steady since patch.
Feedback (hopefully constructive):
I understand why power core was the main game mode for "normal" games. But the custom game options need to have more options. There are a lot of players that are not ranked or ladder players. They want to just mess around with options. There is no standard annihilation games without turrets. No options for disabling faction ultimate abilities. High resources is fine until you build units and your income drops to 0 because of upkeep being the same as in standard game.
Please choose a group of people to appeal to. This game has an identity crisis which is caused by DoW 2 being a game that came out. The first phase of the game is stifled because income is low to allow for more skirmish feel of DoW 2. But then if some how your game goes to 40 minutes you have so much req income you just spam out units. This patch did a good job in my opinion helping to bring this game closer to Dawn of War 1 which aligns with this goal. I would like to see escalation phases cut in half. Or at least further tweaked in the direction of faster games. Sorry to all the Dawn of War 2 players out there. But no matter how you slice it, Dawn of war 1 still has more players than DoW 2. So I think this is the right choice.
Things the game SHOULD take from DoW 2: the last stand and unique hero units. If you look at the player spikes and number of players for DoW 2 they all revolve around expansions coming out and the tau and necron releases for the last stand. The biggest one being for the necron overlord. I beg relic that if they do release the last stand (likely if they don't drop this game's support), don't make the heroes static. Make them like in DoW 2 with wargear that you could customize changing their abilities and changing their aesthetics. On a side note, final mission was a good starting point for last stand. But just start in the final two areas where you fight the waves of enemies and then fight him at the fountain or just fight him at the fountain. The other parts of the mission drew it out too much for my liking. (Also the part where he jumps up and over to the other side of the map and then back again until his health drops to a certain point was really annoying and not fun or interactive)
As far as unique hero units, they are largely fine. I think that especially since you get three of them I don't see an issue with them having fewer skills. On top of any army skills you have. I miss wargear from other dawn of war games especially on the hero units. I would like to see them return for heroes BUT there are much bigger issues that have to addressed first. Maybe for an expansion.
