Analysing the downfall of RTS genre. Part 1 Heresy of Starcraft.
Well long ago a good game was done and by any similar concept in other games people simply start to compare it to Starcraft.
Influenced by Well-intentioned RTS designers, games did get in last years more and more mainstreamed, so RTS lost more and more their distinctive and unique designs.
Problem is people always play the better game.
If there are too many similarities, people think that is a clone/copy, stay by the better game and don't see a reason to get something they already have in better quality.
Like you see, not only by DOW3 and in my opinion,
that's the true reason for decline of entire RTS genre in general.
I mean what is the next best similar game to DOW3 ?
I would say its Terrans gameplay from Starcraft2 without air force.
--> hiding troops behind tall grass is in Starcraft2,
you see 1to1 in DOW3 smoke-filled areas that render units invisible.
--> 3 times Infantry/Vehicle Health/Damage ressearch are just like in Starcraft.
--> elites/superpower = you see somehow in Starcraft2 Co-op.
--> use all the time abilities (high APM) = totally war/starcraft thing.
--> huge elite mech = yeah kind of what Blizzard wanted once with Thor in Starcraft2.
--> dow3 eldar speed buff near own buildings is a truly zerg mechanic.
--> using builders for scouting is what most experienced Starcraft players do, in DOW3 Servitor can even detect enemy units in stealth
--> units die fast = Starcraft thing
--> overpowered unit special abilities that do massive damage = first introduced in Starcraft
--> limited weapon upgrades for trooper units = like by terrans
--> no suppresion = sounds familiar for Starcraft
--> no retreat = yes terrans/zerg/protoss cant do it
--> no veterancy = typical Starcraft
Why DOW3 was doomed? Maybe its simply didn't look distinctive enough from a game, most RTS players did try and play for sure.
Of course you have comparable fundamental design by games,
but the similarities between DOW3 and SC2 are in my opinion really massive.
Its not like previous Relic titles were best games ever,
they just did have a individual design and that did make them good for the survival on the hard and unforgiving market.
