Seriously so expensive worse than flamer. Think best case scenario. I would like it to be a powerful massable premium gun. Flamer best case scenario is complete massacre.
currently I am using them just as a stronger bolters, if you have some TACs surviving for long time, while you have predators and dreadnoughts flying around, I give them plasma as a promotion
they are definitely stronger than flamers, if your enemies cant even reach you, they cant melt you, this is for those fights when you attack enemy LP by sacrificing squad after squad while you are summoning primarchs on opposite side of map and few ignored plasma TACs are something you definitely dont want to miss
there isnt much you can do with them, making them weaker makes them useless, making them cheaper makes them overpowered and as long as you have no variety in armour/damage types you cant even make them some specified tool
I would just want the plasma to not be weaker than a bolter before it starts overheating. MAAAAAAAAAAAAAYBE less time before the fire rate buff kicks in as well. But both might result in some over the top shenanigans.
I think best thing relic could do is remove the fire rate buff and overheat and just have plasma guns give a flat damage bonus so that it deals more damage than bolter.
This would require relic to change plasma gun doctrine though.

This would be dumber than gabe´s flip. Plasma guns are suposed to do high dmg per hit, and low rate of fire. So your solution would make them just an flat out buff, instead of an trade off for more efficency against low model troops
That is exactly what i tried to suggest though. If anything my suggestion would bring plasmas in tune with the lore.... Remove high rate of fire. And improve damage making them do good damage vs low model troops but being weaker vs high model troops due to lower rate of fire.

Yea. I would like to like them but i just don't see a reason to go for them with their current performance and price.

Whirlwinds will always be better than plasmas. Think of how shiet the cost of 3x plasma. 1 whirlwind is always a better buy than 3x plasma.
Infantry need reinforcing and are frail.
THe potential of perfect whirlwind shots means you win easy

It seems like by the time time their DPS is actually worth it they overheat just moments later. So wtf is the point.
