I was in doubt if i should create this topic in the Balance feedback or in the sugestions, so i will make it in the general
There are some problems in the elite system (as i see it) that lead to the same elites being used ALL the time, namely the low cost ones. I was using 3-4-9 composition and losing all the time, so i just changed to 2-3-4 and now i am on rampage in the ladder in all game modes. In the recent balance feedback conversation initiated by Relic, @Kat_RE expressed the desire to see if the economy changes would lead to more late game elites being used. Well, i am 100% sure that it will not happen for several reasons, some of those being:
1) the power progression of the elites is Arithmetic. That means that a 9 point elite is designed to be as strong as a 4 and a 5 point elites together. while the progression of the overall match is geometric, that means that the elite power progression should be geometric also, with a 9 point elites being way stronger than a 5 and a 4 elites together. I do understand that this kind of change would make all kind of balance problems, but here i am just diagnosing the problem.
2) As cited in the top paragraph cause of the kind of power progression of the elites the early ones are ALWAYS more impactfull and it will keep being with the delayed game pace from the next patch since...
3) Low point elites not just sum their power faster as their use also permits the use of late game nukes and help GREATLY in the map control.
So in the next patch nothing will change... 2-3-4 and other low point elites compositions will still rule the meta and the fields of battle of the 41th milenium.
So, how can we bring more balance to the viability of elite choices? I have read several sugestions, like puting a cost in reespawn of elites, i think this one bad cause it just punish dead elites, and dead elites are already punished by their time off from the game.
My sugestion is to put a considerable price each time a elite will take the field THE FIRST time. That cost should be equal to all elites and high enough that fielding an elite, at least a low point elite would NEVER be a no brainer.
I was thinking in something along the lines of 500/50. Its a bit more expensive than a ASM squad, but high enough to make fielding an early game elite a choice and not a necessity and the added power cost would pretty much require that this elite should be used to do something, as it is now even i that like a defensive playstyle have to use the deathwatch without any real objective other than matching my opponent early elite and pile up the biggest amount of elites possible in the field in the fastest way possible.
Fielding a elite should be a choice, and 500/50 would hurt more in the early game than the late, as it must be since the elite presence is way more powerful in the first minutes of the match.
