Observer mode is a requested feature that is mentioned here and there in miscellaneous threads, but I thought it would be worth making a new thread for it. Firstly because content patches (And balance patches) do seem largely in response to community feedback and the more we highlight key issues the better. Secondly because I do feel that something as simple as this feature can be a big deal for community formation and survival and I wanted to elaborate on why I think this is the case.
"influencers" (as is the popular term for social media personalities these days). Relic are perfectly aware of the importance of youtubers and twitch streamers in modern multiplayer communities - given their own social media presence - but despite this dow3 doesn't have this basic feature used by casters, whereas legacy games made in a time where these forms of media were not as prominent (or even in existence yet) included observer mode. Channels like Indrid casts etc can generate interest in the game if entertaining games can be observed/refereed. I wonder what the likes of maestro and Indrid did for the dow2 ELITE mod in terms of player numbers. Observer mode facilitates free advertising.
making the game friendlier to newcomers. Somebody nervous or unpracticed could use an observer system to learn about how to play, or at the very least learn of the current meta and know even a little of what to expect. TTK and learning curve being what it is, this would not go amiss. The more welcoming you can be to your newcomers the more will stay.
ad hoc community formation. A group of friends, or steam/discord groups cannot referee their own tournaments without an observer function. Helping these small communities form and operate helps the community as a whole thrive. Bonus if the matches are casted on social media as mentioned above.
I apologise for the wall of text, but I do feel like it's worth being a squeaky wheel over this. What do you guys think?
Edit: screwed up the formatting
