Attention loyal subjects of the Imperium a warband of Orks was spotted at large roaming our beloved forum. They are often leaving toxic dumps around and are causing more damage to our beautiful Gothic than even general Sulla can. Refrain from feeding them and should they be spotted they must be immediately reported to the nearest Adeptus Arbites office.
Seriously guys what you can sometimes make from post is something even Tzeentch doesnt know. Threads are getting derailed, important information are getting lost. Keep it to general or offtopic, but when you are making some importang post eg comments on balance or reporting a bug, its important to make them in such way other people can get to the point without retinue of navigators.
Beautiful example is new "Balance Feedback" section, going through some posts with 200+ comments is a work even Iron Warriors wouldnt want to do. People are responding to personal offenses and add only desperate cries for justice because they lost. Now imagine someone is supposed to balance the whole game based on this.
So here are some tips ...
Title - Title is important, it can often decide if people will even try reading your posts. Yes clickbaits are nice but sometimes saying what you actually want to talk about is better than just "OMG IMBA" title. You can also add stuff like [D] [Q] [O] and use it as a tag for "Discussion" "Question" "Off topic", it might help getting attention of the right people if you are just looking for help or want a company to send some cries through immaterium.
Format - Posts and comments here have very nice and simple format system. Use it, its just one more click. Using headings is really nice when you are making some long posts like ideas for new races or when you talk about multiple things to balance.
1. They look fancy.
2. Your comments will look like you actually know what you are talking about.
3. Comments wont be mess. people will find things that are interesting to them faster and can in return comment only on certain parts.
Font - Use cursive to mark some words, if you are unsure about something or want to point your opinion.
Bold instead of mentioning whole name for your heavy bolter devastator squad sergeant you can just say that guy to keep it short and when that guy appears again to shoot something in your post it will help people to quickly catch up.
Exterminatus striking stuff through is handy tool too, you can use it to correct mistakes after you post your comment so when someone rereads it they will notice your edited something or use it to hide some personal opinions and small shenanigans.
Length - When its possible keep it short, people lose attention fast and it may happen before before they get to important parts. Personal and emotional stuff can be nice but more likely it will just end as ammunition for trolls.
When you cant help yourself use spoiler in the format tab to keep all secondary info away. Its nice when you want to post your personal opinion or some funny backstory thats not important to the main post.
Information - Thats the gene seed of your post. When you are talking about balance, reporting a bug or simply asking a question, keep your backstories at home. You can post personal stuff later but in comment important information should always appear first. Nice thing is also shortcut TL;DR meaning "Too Long Didnt Read" people will sometimes look for this when your post is too long, use it as a summary of your post. Could be used here
TL;DR: Stop writing like orks.
Vids/Pics - Picture is worth a thousand words. Add picture or video when you talk about complicated stuff. People might know what you are talking about but pictures are universal language and instead of describing "you know that one spot on that map" you can just upload screenshot.
When you are talking about balance or need help with some strategy upload your replays it will help people to see where is the problem. It can also help when you speak only in low gothic or your oratory skills are rather unsatisfactory, just post picture and say diz and people will understand without having to learn new language.
You can upload videos on youtube or google drive and pictures can go on photobucket, they even provide link that will instantly show the pic in comment instead of external link, and you can upload replays directly on gamereplays website. And instead of inserting whole link you can shorten in by using "URL edit tool" when you make the post and join picture to certain word or sentence directly. There are tons of places where you can upload for free and you dont need to upload your whole 90 minutes long game, use simple recording tools even lame fraps, or if you have nvidia card it comes with recording option in your GFexperience.
Edit - Dont forget you can edit your comments and posts for 1 hour after posting. Comments can be edited directly in post and post are edited from "outside", you need to find them in the section where you posted them and when you mouse over them there will appear the edit button.
Found a mistake? Better way to explain something? More info?Want to talk about more things? Edit.
Personal stuff - Writing how you are mad about something is good if you want to make something urgent, but dont forget its just ammunition for your enemy and they can use it to make your post look less important.
Before you post something go for a walk, get a drink, eat apple or steak or tyranid if it makes you happy. Being rude just turns people away from your post, just because there is language filter doesnt mean you should excessively curse and if you want to curse you can just use one of the gaking feth words 40k universe is providing us with to show that you are mad but can get over it.
You can also use emoticons to show that you might have slightly different opinion than your comment is saying.
Backstories are nice, they can help understand the situation when the thing you are talking about is happening. But you should either save them for later, sending important info ahead or add TL;DR tag at the end so when someone wants to help they can get to the point.
Have a nice day.
