I still can not believe it ... Graphically, it was perfect. So, of course, there were balancing problems, missing units, buildings ... but I do not understand why it did not have this expected success ... We are 5 friends to play and we are 5 to appreciate it ... as we had appreciated DoW1.
I would still be curious to know the progress of the Necrons, or other race in development. Just to "remuer le couteau dans la plaie" "stir the knife in the wound (?)". @r_benb
What was wrong with the players? I'm not talking about the current problems, but at the source, why did not this game attract people?
I'm disgusted ^^ really ...
Before this conversation gets away from us, we don't think anything was wrong with the players. Sure, they're tough on us but they like what they like and that's okay. Our challenge was complicated because DOW players are different than DOW2 players who are different than DOW3 players - each has different priorities, wants and needs.
Yeah, that was pretty suicidal to try to appeal to both, dow2 and dow1 audiences as both are fanatically zealous and will refuse any, even slightest alteration to the base gameplay.
However with how popular RTS genre is nowadays, I guess DoW3 still had pretty decent run, considering literally all other RTS games released past 5 years.
This thread makes every one sad, but life is life and the show must go on (in other direction).
My thanks to all relic team for your hard work and for the love that you guys put in this game, I really enjoyed and made a lot of internet friends from all over the world with it. Im sure that were the best 1250 hours I ever put in a game (in my case is saying a lot).
Anyway, this is not a goodbye, its more like a cya later.

Maybe this was your mistake?
Mix 2 opus, and announce that the third would be a mix.
Maybe you should not have talked about previous chapters and only focus on this third, ignoring the glories of the past?
@r_benb
Hey, Ben! It is very sad news. I think, that Relic is to blame for the players. So you can release pre-order skins "Masters of War" as apologies. At least make it paid stuff (paid DLC).
Can you even open DLC Blood Ravens Veterans of Aestas for DOW2 for all players?
Question for me and relic whats next?where should we go too next a new rts, genre change or keeep playing dow when you can expect little support in dow.
Should we contiue to support relic or switch band waggon when we know what we can expect on development perspective.
Dow will always be great it served its purpose and could have worked a long shot but if desition early on were more effective the commuity would have grown. but as there going to be no support little so no new major content. I can only expect a small deticated community of modder and deticated player who have seen the good and the bad. To produce and keep this game being played till some highrackee steps in and takes lead.
Thank you relic for makeing this game the thought and efforts behind the sense was hidden so i can only say thanks for all the small fixes and contributions.
Im bit sad and angry but thats just my emotions setting in because we put a lot of time and effort into the game. Could say goodbye but nothing gone or dead yet only say look forward to your future products
After taking some time to process the news, I have to say I am incredibly disappointed in Relic's decision here. I understand the immediate business reasons for making this decision, but the long term rammifications of this decision are either being ignored or underestimate by the person who made the decision.
Relic has not had a game that received straight critical and consumer acclaim since Company of Heroes.
Dawn of War 2 was a very turbulent release, with many people having strong adverse reactions to the new design. CoH1 fans thought it was too dumbed down and fast paced, DoW1 fans thought it was too micro heavy and small scale. The game was incredibly poorly balanced and had that ++heresy redacted++ Games for Windows Live crap and a was missing a ton of quality of life features.
You know what made Dawn of War 2 into the fondly remembered title it is today? Relic put in the ++heresy redacted++ work. They released the "There is Only War" patch at the end of July, a mere 4 months after release, which overhauled game balance. This was the reforming of the foundation of DoW2 that could be built off of for the next 3 years before support for DoW2 was ended prematurely by THQ in its death throes. The Last Stand came out in October, 6 months after release, to great acclaim and then Chaos Rising came out around a year after release that introduced a fan favourite faction, new heroes for The Last Stand and a very ambitious singleplayer campaign. Retribution was even more ambitious, with a new map for The Last Stand, a new hero and a campaign that could be played as any race, in addition to a new faction. (Plus two DLC heroes for The Last Stand)
Company of Heroes 2 similarly released to negative reviews. It's currently sitting at a lower user score on metacritic (I know) than Dawn of War 3. The campain was extremely mediocre and historically inaccurate (hence the metacritic scores) and the balance was pretty messed up. Guess what, Relic put in the ++heresy redacted++ work again. Western Front Armies added two new factions and countless balance patches brought the game to a solid state after about a year. Then a year and half later, UKF was released. And the game received balance updates as recently as December 2017.
Both of those games grew over the years and developed stable playerbases. But it required work and effort and new content and patch support.
So here comes Dawn of War 3. The reaction is stronger than the other two games out of the gate, with a lot more vitriol and outrage. However, the balance is much better and there's a great base to build off of. What does Relic do?
Experiment with major economy and lethality changes, throwing ++heresy redacted++ at the wall and hoping it makes some people happy or something.
Add Annhilate mode and more options for custom games
Releases 3 new elites in October.
Release ~3-4 new maps.
Goes radio silence for 4 months and then announces they are abandoning the game.
And abandoning is the correct word. You're saying collectively as a studio that making content for the Dawn of War 3 audience is not worth your time or effort. You're not even going to support the game with balance patches or quality of life fixes. Did you guys even plan content rivaling Chaos Rising or Western Front Armies/Adennes Assault? Or did you just give up three months after release and sat around talking about how to overhaul DoW3 instead of just adding the simple things people wanted: TLS, new factions, more campaign.
I've been playing Relic's games for over ten years now starting with a collection of DoW1/Winter Assault/Dark crusade I got for Christmas. I've bought every single game you've released since then at full price, on release. I even bought that stupid Blood DLC for Dawn of War 2 just to give you guys some more money. I was hit hard by the recession in Alberta but still, I scrounged up the money to buy Dawn of War 3 at full price a week after being laid off again and being in the middle of a job hunt. Luckily I'm doing much better now, but I just want you to know that I bought your game even though I shouldn't have. I had absolute faith that you would do right by fans of Dawn of War 3, however few of us there are, because I watched you guys support Dawn of War 2 and CoH2 for years post-release. Even if you only did a fraction of the content that you put out for your prior games, I was atleast expecting you to pull out all the stops and try to give it a heroic sendoff with some sort of content. Instead we get three skins and a "Please keep an eye out for our two future projects, AoE IV and Mysterious Game X"
I will keep playing Dawn of War 3 for now but I won't be buying another Relic game again. Dawn of War 3 might have been a failed game, but abandoning it less than a year after release will be the deathblow for Relic as a studio. How many people here are honestly going to buy Age of Empires IV after knowing that Relic doesn't stand by their games? Or whatever your future unannounced project is. (Probably not an RTS anymore anyway.)
Sad news, but I suppose it was sort of written on the wall over the past few months. I know you guys had to do a lot of thinking and changing plans based on the initial reception and trying to fix things. I am curious though, can you tell us what the original road map was before everything changed? Any details would be interesting. Was there going to be a Last Stand type mode at some point? The Necrons were heavily hinted, would it have been a multi race expansion? I know this is all moot at this point but I just am wondering what kinds of plans you guys had pre release if everything had gone will.
Was the player retention (or lack thereof) that killed DoW3 or that not enough people bought it? Or both? Would appreciate any insight regarding any of the above questions. Thanks for trying and best of luck in the future with the next titles. I'm rooting for you guys to make your next game a success.

We were going to follow a similar model to our past releases but I can't get into the details.

Oh ++heresy redacted++ it. You asked us to wait few months for this?!
You realised a game with only 1 gamemode (and controversial one not clasical) 3 races in place of 4 and no SP content that would be replayable at AAA price. It is very fun to play have fine wh40k feeling and so on but to keep it alive you HAD TO add more quicly via dlc or expansions. The game will die now totally.
I liked dow3 and i cant express how much dissapointed i am now. I bought dow and 2 with all dlc i played them thousands of hours i was yours fan.And you know what Ben? I wish you all the best because its not your personal fault but please tell relic's directors that because of that ++heresy redacted++ i wont trust your company, never again. I can come here with quotes that u were saying that 1. the game have planrd post launch support 2. AFTER Launch you were still saying you gonna make it beter.
I wont buy any relic game in future i think. It is a suicide for you.
++heresy redacted++ dissapointing...preorderd and burned for $70 only to have support for the game dropped after a few months. I am still a big fan of the games Relic makes, all the way since Homeworld, but I wont be pre-ordering from you guys anymore. And since I have ZERO interest in AoE I guess I will be waiting for DoW4 or a Space Marine 2 for that redemption.
@r_benb, since we are putting in last requests can we get some Beksiński WraithKnight skins from the Trailer?
@r_benb Please, at least completely release the modification tool for this game and its community of players to move forward, since it has a lot of potential that it is a pity to waste so soon.
I have spent many hours doing the Dawn of War III Revolution mod and I would like to continue improving it so that at least there is an alternative or an opportunity for Dawn of War III players.

TBH I don't think anyone even considered shutting down the forums...so let's not start now.
I've answered that as best I can already but to recap: unlikely but I'll flag it along with the balance and total conversions that other people have mentioned. What specifically within the custom match are you looking for?
sorry to hear that ben but i wont buy any SEGA/RELIC game ever.you easily gave up and even didnt try anything big(gameplay rework or new races).i dont trust you anymore and i think you may easily abandon your future games too. RIP dow series

I disagree. DoW players are generally loyal because they are joined by the W40K background (30 years of background). There may be substantial changes between the previous ones, but do not forget that DoW is the representative of the W40K RTS genre, I do not know if you are aware of what that means.
Of course, if you do not keep adding content, this will be the least DoW played in the story, because what we need is content, and not skins.
Relic workers. Ask yourself a simple question. How many races do we have in previous DoW without mods?. This is Warhammer 40K and you knew what you were working on. Of course, it will be the least played in history if it has such limited content.
They are nowhere as loyal as CoH fans were. Seriously, I wasn't been able to stay positive on it even for 2 months. CoH2 was a terrible slap, but I'm not just everyone. With all these stupid bugs and flawed to the core gameplay, at least 1/5 of people I know remained loyal for about 8 months, untill they were traded for the newer guys.
It's not the first time I see how a good RTS dies. There was Etherium, Act of Agression. The only thing new is that stupidity have it's own name this time - Dawn of War community. This game was burried even prior release. By the majority of it.
I sincerely hope that you guys (Relic) dont abandon DOW....You guys really have made some of , if not THE best RTS games i can think of....Homeworld, Dow1 Dow2, COH1 and 2...master pieces...THERE IS A HUUUUUUUGE AUDIENCE FOR DOW...I hope you guys make a DOW4. Now im gonna be brutally honest...i hated DOW3...everything about it, and to be fair it didnt feel like a Relic game...like i said you guys are awesome at RTS games and this one felt so..not relic and not DOW...
Do you think maybe it was just too long between iterations?....do you think maybe you guys kinda forgot what DoW was?....Were you guys sporadically working on it or was it literally on the shelves for years untouched? It just feels so....out of touch with what DOW is supposed to be, dark gritty violent....this game felt humorous and cartoony....abandoning quintessential DoW and even Relic features...forgo a cover system for magical bubbles....omit a veterancy system....perfect little patches of perfectly placed grass that makes your guys invisible...i mean wtf...
They shoot themselfes in both knees. All the press articles gonna wtite about that because:there are not much rts makers so when they write about rts they write usualy about relic or blizzard , it was loud about relic lately because of aoe announcment;big companies failures are always better known that some indie and relic is recognizable enought. How the hell the gonna sell any products now?

I'm not looking for any extra features, just the ability to load/edit/mod existing and custom files (outside of the modding tools) like the camera unlock script without restrictions or needing the -dev flag (but only in custom games and if everyone else has the same files).

Whatever "abandon your future games too" means. They were kind enough to bring their past games to the new server arch, and even provided Steamworks support to former GFWL titles, and to salvage CoH1 when Ubisoft bought their previous ones. And all of their games so far had multiple expansions. Having this one left in this state doesn't say anything about the future.
I'd just like to throw it out there that while I didn't like dawn of war 3, I do still like the series as a whole and hope to see it return in some way in the future. I think the biggest failure of DOW 3 for me was that it didn't feel like a Dawn of War game.
The over the top voice acting, the sync kills, the bombastic music, the fantasy of playing the races, last stand... the stuff that made it stand out from starcraft and other popular games in the genre - I didn't feel like they were there. I often see people say Dawn of war 3 would have done better if it were named or themed as something else, and I believe it's because the game doesn't capture the spirit of prior games in the Dow series.
As for a question I guess since its a Q/A...
Do you guys check sites like Reddit, steam forums, and other places aside from the relic forums/surveys for feedback as well?

Literally less then 10 citizens of the Imperium are not mindless, fanatical, indoctrinated drones if we exclude "rebels and heretics" aka "people who actually do think for themselves".

I'm not looking for any extra features, just the ability to load/edit/mod existing and custom files (outside of the modding tools) like the camera unlock script without restrictions or needing the -dev flag (but only in custom games and if everyone else has the same files).

bah, we all know ++heresy redacted++ good and well we will buy any of Relic's products if they are good enough....but i will say this...I pre ordered DoW 3 and i couldnt do it fast enough.....i will not do that again with them...i do feel a bit....betrayed. However I will happily purchase their products again, they have a long history of extraordinary games.

I can't ++heresy redacted++ believe it. We all stuck with it, for all this time.. and they always knew a new race was never coming...

Hey Ben,
I'd just like to throw it out there that while I didn't like dawn of war 3, I do still like the series as a whole and hope to see it return in some way in the future.
