Playing Expansion Races with a Friend

I have a little problem. I recently got Winter Assault because I play Imperial Guard on the tabletop and wanted to try it out. I have a friend I enjoy playing with who only has vanilla Dawn of War. Is there any way I could play Imperial Guard against him without forcing him to buy Winter Assault? There was a forum post a while ago that vaguely mentioned that it was possible but I have tried it on both Winter Assault and the original DoW, but I did not appear to my friend in the lobby on Winter Assault and on the original DoW I could not play as Imperial Guard.
