I dont mind base building as a game mechanic. But lorewise it doesent make any bloody sense
Only the Orks and IG would probably build stuff in the field. The rest are more likely to drop in stuff with landers/transporters. Maybe dropping fortifications and refueling sites would make sense but thats about the limit that the actual building would get...
Maybe DoW2 hacked way too much in base building. Maybe. But base building like it is 1995.? Which brings back turtling, rushes, tank rushes, spamming etc. That is just retrograding. In that regard SC2 is just plain better, and trying to make better Starcraft than Starcraft is just plain stupid.
Also, DoW2 was primarily focused on combat micro, and not build orders micro. Which in my opinion is way better. Maybe couple of buildings are ok, but massive bases are not justified neither by need for such a thing, nor lore, and neither by times. There is a reason why MOBA's ate RTS genre - cause it was too slow, repetitive and static. You lost 10 min of a match building thing you ALWAYS build instead of fighting your opponent. And half the matches were decided by APM, instead of skill and forethought. So if you are claiming SC2 did a fine job making a RTS, then go and play SC2.
Basebuilding is a Core Element of RTS, Im glad to see it back in DoW III
I'll weigh in on this too. Now I am a big fan of games like Dune 2 and Command and Conquer. I love building up Mongolian hordes and sweeping across a map decimating everything. I sit giggling at the pure carnage and try to figure out new ways to do it. Now I'm also a big fan of the War Hammer 40K books as well. While DoW sated my need to move across the land like a plague of locusts, DoW 2 made me fell like I was part of the books. I don't recall any book talk about churning out units at a alarming rate on the planet they are conquering. It would be nice to see a hybrid of both, making base building possible but not necessary to complete the mission. By not building you get better perks and upgrades on your units. This can be a and economy thing, the resources you save by keeping your numbers down and upkeep cost low can go into better research for your existing units.
Before people go on a flame fest, remember, your NOT making this game. Everything here is opinion, no one persons opinion is worth more or less than anyone else's opinion. How about keeping it civil?
