This is getting out of control. People are starting to criticize the game without arguments or reason. Don't miss interpret my words however, there are some really good individuals between us that have serious complains with the game footage showed so far and those people have solid arguments for their opinions. Unfortunately i can not say the same for everyone, to be honest i cant even say that for the majority of the community, this forum is becoming a minefield for innocent/ignorant people that don't understand the lore or how a game works, and because of that there is a risk that this game may fail for misinformation or strait out ignorance from our part. Major issue i see around here are the nonsensical comparison between DoW3 and the MOBA genre as well as Starcraft 2, a RTS made by Blizzard Entertainment in 2010. I say nonsensical because people compare this too games/genres by fear, or simply misinterpretation. Relic is NOT taking inspiration by MOBA's gameplay aspects, but instead by some of their game philosophies and techniques used for better visual knowledge for the player. They are utilizing a more clear and responsive gameplay so the players are able to receive as much visual information as possible with the minimal ocular and cerebral effort. This consequentially lets players focus more on real strategy than micro-management, therefore a better RTS experience. The cover system is indeed simplified but it has some new interesting mechanics: Theres the rudimentary "bubble" cover, the environment now stop projectiles, there are some interesting buff/debuffing mechanics (the only showed so far is the fire spelled by the Imperial Knight stays on the ground and all the enemy units inside that area takes over time damage, but several other mechanics similar to this one are present on the GDD (Game Design Document) but were not showed yet to the public) and several other minor concepts. And finally, and most probably the most controversial of all, the new aesthetics of DoW3. Lets be clear here, this is not about taste, this are facts. Aesthetics and Graphics are 2 separate game components. Graphics are all around polygons and rendering methods used to create more accurate and detailed models and environments. Aesthetics are the artistic design and philosophy of a game, as visual as auditory and also related to the lore and emotional feeling transmitted through animations, voice acting, etc. I highly recommend you all to see a video from Extra Credits called "Graphics vs. Aesthetics - Why High Resolution Graphics Aren't Enough - Extra Credits" (i cant put links yet, apologies) to give you a better perspective about this topic in specific. The only thing about this that is debatable is if the current Aesthetics of DoW3 represent accurately the 40K theme. Personally i don't believe that the art style have the definitive impact on the matter. I believe that a specific theme is represented by actions, by emotions, feelings and philosophies, not by their visuals.
