I wanted to talk about improving the customisation part of the game and adding the unit preservation. My goal here is to give the game a layout of tactical upgrades, and more diversity within the units and the roster while encouraging the player to possibly preserve certain units. Some weapons/mecanics that I talk about are not in game and are only here as examples. Also, this is done is a way that doesn't / shouldn't impact what is already present in the game and act only as an addition.
So I'll take Space Marines as a example to show what can be done :
The first thing to improve customisation, is to NOT change their primary role (either melee, ranged anti vehicule or ranged anti-infantry). As such, a tactical marine for example will stay effective/ineffective against a certain type of unit whatever the upgrade. What will be done is giving alot of different weapons for different mecanics to the units and the roster and with that, different unit strategies, and army compositions.
for example a tacical marine will have the possibility of choosing bolter (continuous fire) flamer (cone skill) plasma (burst of fire) graviton (low dmg but stun). the devastator heavy bolter (continuous fire and slow) will be able to choose between autocannon (AOE dmg), assault cannon (high dmg + reload). The devastator lacannon (increasing dmg beam) will be able to choose between heavy plasma (stuns vehicules), multi melta (continuous fire). Assault marine (continuous dmg) can also have melee upgrades, such as power weapons (slower for more powerfull), power axe (slower but heavy damage on landing). same for dreadnoughts, predators etc...
implementing an expensive leader choice would also be a good customisation and unit preservation encouragement.
the second point is about choosing those upgrades before/during/after a fight to adapt better to the current situation. So while customising would be powerfull if you have the correct upgrades, they are not easily interchangeable. As such, you need to be at base to do so, or near a special unit for example. It also takes time during which your squad can be vulnerable.
- For that we also need to implement abit more unit preservation. And the perfect example for that is transports. Space marines having a Rhino could pick up units at base, bring them to the front, pick a unit on the front and retreat it for rearmement, regroupement and rebattle. The Rhino would also be the perfect example of unit that would allow squads out of combat to change their weaponry (and slowly heal also maybe). Also, land raiders mecanic !
So, what would you think of those 2 ideas ?
Would it be better in another way ?
Or it wouldn't work well ?
