Obviously i'm not talking about the Elites like the Imperial Knight or the Wraith Knight but what I'm referring to is the line infantry. The Tactical Marines and... uh, the Eldar equivalent (I won't lie, i know very little about 40K ), the support units like the MG, snipers, and so on. Basically small arms infantry.
And while I think melee looks really awesome with the jumping attacks, the powerful AOEs, and whatnot, the ranged combat aspect seems rather underwhelming in comparison. I'm fine with the new cover system given how frantic and fast the game is with all those units all at the same time but what I usually see happens is that ranged units just stand around, inch closer, and start to blob up because:
a.) Ranged Units Attack move while most of the manual micro is on the melee units
b.) There's no more tactical cover like in COH and the other DOWs where you need to move your infantry into cover to get protection. Or you move them around to flank enemies in cover.
I dunno, maybe it's just because i've been playing COH2 for 3 years and while I do have issues with the cover system in them, I will likely miss the tactical ranged combat from the COH games in DOW3 since it seems the micro burden and tactical movement seems to have shifted to Melee units.
That said however, we've only seen a CAMPAIGN MISSION against AI and things might be really different in Multiplayer where if you dont tactically space out your ranged units, they will be vulnerable to artillery fire, suppression, and melee attacks like the Eldars who shriek and suppress units in close range
Anyone else worried about the Ranged Combat aspect maybe being too macro from what we've seen?

I don't mind the animation. I'll be honest, yes when I first played COH, I was blown away by the 'realistic' animations and movement. At the time, which I probably shouldn't have been playing the M-rated game
, I looked past the wonkiness of the tactical movement where soldiers would leap OUT OF COVER or separate from the squad, which today I would find a bit too chaotic and out of my control in multiplayer.
With COH2, I was blown away by the atmosphere, sound, and brutality but I'd say after 6 months of playing it, the novelty wore off and I never again zoomed in close to see the battles from a 'cinematic' angle. I don't notice the animations, the soldier-to-soldier chatter, or so on. It's kinda like me with the Sync Kills. It looked amazing in 2004, okay in 2009, but now kill animations are in almost every game and very few games do it impressively nowadays.
Does the Unit animation look outdated in DOW3 compared to past Relic games? Sure. On its own, it looks quite a step back. Buuuuuuuuut suppose they do make the animations better, will I or most people say: "I love how the unit animations are in DOW3, it's so realistic and i constantly think about it" ... 6 months into playing the game? Nope! I and everyone else will be waaaaaaaaay too focused on microing, using abilities, and just playing the game than drooling over the animations.

You know the old saying, not everything is always as it seems :P who knows it could feel and play completely different from how it looks. we'll just have to wait and play it to know for sure.

I think melee combat is just fine but I really don't like the tactical and devastator firing animations. It feels way too bouncy. I get that there might be some sort of recoil on the guns but the devastators especially look so comical, like heavy from tf2. And the tactical marines animation feels like it barely has any frames to it.

My only and only problem with ranged is that Bolters are supposed to be automatic! Why is every marine suddenly only firing one bullet at a time?
Nautiloidor
Bolters are rarely used full auto, due to the limited clip size and to save ammo. Also, even a SM will have trouble shooting a bolter full auto accurately at anything over 15 meters away. Plus, with a carefully placed shot, not many things really need more than one bolt to kill. A bolter is not a machine gun to spay and pray with. Better to line up each shot and make each bolt count, which a SM does with deadly efficiency.
They were also semi auto in DOW2.
