When I play DoW, DoW2, CoH, CoH2, the worst thing of all is the RNG. Each game is different and through this kind of play I have developed an unusual love hate relationship for the game. It is infuriating when your unit count rapidly drop to 0 while in green cover. And yet it feels amazing when the enemy seems to have no clue what makes you so grood when their units start getting rekt. I could punch my screen when a generic tank wipes a squad for no reason. And I love it when my arty shell fall straight on the head of my opponents sniper. It just doesn't make any sense.
So my question is: Is this fair? To be honest I do think so, because everybody is stuck with the same rules.
But because of the giant range of the RNG and the lack of feedback of what you can expect I always find myself hitting the quit game button before finishing a match.
All Relic games have failed to improve in this matter and that is probably why these games have never kept a larger main core of the player base.
How can I claim such a thing? Because its Random!
For competitive players there is no consistency. It's hard to have a good grip on mechanics that lay the foundation for the game.
If winning is not within your hands to determine the outcome. Then there is no need to invest time in the game in the first place.
Through datamining and occasional updates we the players have concluded that there are multiple factors determining hit chance, damage and other aspects.
The more variables you add, the more complicated your solution needs to be, to balance a game.
That is why the CoH and DoW games have always had issues with balance and hardly scratched the surface of e-sports.
Even for the casual player this is hell. Because they are out to have fun. And if you're unable to learn why your units die so quickly then you might just throw away the game for good. I've had plenty of matches with friends, that I'm trying to get better in the game, and they just get frustrated. And there is nothing I can say that can make the situation reasonable or logical. When your mortar misses 10 times in a row. And the enemy mortar wipes your squad with one lucky hit. You just want to flip the table.
Players that rage quit games is not a thing you want to have in your games. And we need people from this community to be more outspoken and honest about this issue. I know it feels good when a player leaves 10 min in so you don't have to waste time. But thinking of the long term, it's not healthy for the game because the player base drops.
These Relic rts games are amazing. But the RNG is a small, silent cancer that is rotting from the core. I'm aware the development proces is in it's final stages. But for the love of the Emperor. We need to have more discussions on lowering the RNG to make things consistent an reliable. So we can have fun and get better without questioning every move we make.
Please Relic, consider lowering or completely removing RNG from DoW3.
Tanks for reading.
