It finally hit me whats really bothering me. It's been niggling at the back of my mind and I couldn't put a finger on it until I started replaying vDow to scratch the itch... which also reminds me I've got a glitch question for the Dow 1 forums but anyway..
Probably absolutely no point mentioning this now. . I strongly suspect the window in which this sort of thing could be done anything about passed sixish months ago.
My smiley bits so far:
I actually like the art style. It's not remotely grimdark, but I can dig it.
The almost-Moba esque elite setup I am completely willing to give all the benefits of every doubt ever. Frankly as a primarily offline singleplayer casual hobbyist git I've purchased every single DoW and CoH title and expansion and none of them have let me down, Dow 1 and 2 were vast departures from each other but I love 'em both; and am looking to welcoming this one with open arms.
The splody special effects light show I'm fine with. But then I have a bad bad tendency to put OSL and jeweling on my minis even where it has no real business being.
However In order of the degree to which they chafe my teats, my dislikes are:
3. Scale discrepancies, mostly between Gabe and bros. (Eldar elites aren't that far off their line troops, Gorgutz is s'posed__ to be bigga).
2. Gabriel Angelos, Chapter Master; _Captain of the Cheerleading Squad; voted most likely to order Exterminatus on home planet. Has an almost-immodest polaroid signed "Can't Touch This you flipping fool" by Macha.. Yeah flippy swollen Gabe is an embarassment.
- But the sudden epiphany.... we will not have attachable commanders will we? We have weapon choices and some upgrades but we won't be able to increase squad size or attach commanders. I really think that's why squads in replay videos are feeling disposable (other than player technique.. i.e. lack thereof). In DoW2 every squad was precious and the campaign was all heroes all the time. In Dow1 Once you had a squad maxed out first off it was quite powerful and second you felt deeply inclined to preserve it. Add in various commanders and your tactics with said squad could change dramatically. In the absence of these points I really am concerned about our infantry essentially becoming creeps. Just something to throw at the other side as a bullet soak and hp drain while the elites do all the work. And as I said, at this point I'm sure it would be pointless to mention this as a "suggestion" as the fundamental design is done.
still buying it, still gonna pitch headfirst into the game... but still have all the previous titles installed also.
