I love Victory Point mode I love how it directs the combat to (usually) 3 key points of the map. It helps create frontlines, it allows you to dig in and fortify around it, and/or you can flank around their defenses. It just allows more tactics and strategic decisions. Not only that, VPs create a sense of tension seeing points dwindle away as it nears zero. That tension isnt really ever there for me when I play :drumroll: ... Annihilation
Annihilation, base destruction, or 'classic mode' bore me actually. Ever since I got spoiled by Relic's RTS games, whenever I try playing C&C, Act of Agression, StarCraft, WarCraft 3 and so on again, I cant help but find destroying the enemy's base(s) incredibly monotonous, slow, and annoying to play hide and seek. Granted, I will admit the only thing I enjoy about Base Destruction is taking out power reactors to shut down the enemy's defenses, radar, and slow down their production
So that brings me to DOW3. From what we've seen, Capture Points still are around. But being a campaign level, we dont know how the game mode would be in MP yet. Will there be VPs like in the past Relic games? I really hope so. However, with the whole Base Building aspect being more focused on, I wonder if this is hinting at Annihilation mode as being a potential main mode. If Relic is trying to mimic other popular RTS games, then it's possible they decide most RTS players from C&C, StarCraft, etc want to destroy the enemy's base. On the other hand, the base building in DOW3 doesnt seem as convoluted or in depth as it is in the other RTS games.
Regardless, I would prefer VPs as being the main mode but I guess ideally Relic could make Annihilation more interesting and less of a slog like in COH2 and DOW2 if they design the base building and maps around Annihilation as well.
