In case some people are wondering what exactly is this bug, here's a little run down of it when it "randomly" occurs.
1. The game ceases to play any new sound files. Sounds already being played continue as normal, including the music track.
2. A single looping sound (those that play until told not to, such as a vehicle's engine sound) that was in play at the time will continue playing forever. It matters not what's on screen or even if you exit back to the main menu, that looping sounds still plays on.
3. Actions that require the completion of a sound file never occur (of course, because the sound file never starts). Typically this'll be the campaign dialogs, where "something" usually happens when the dialog close. It appears the dialog is synced to the sound file played, so if the sound file isn't played, then the dialog wont close and thus the campaign mission wont progress any further.
4. At this point, the game still plays on for ~1 minute. When approaching the end of this time period, the game starts to "jerk" a little bit here and there, suggesting that the game might be flooding its cache.
5. The game stops entirely and crashes to desktop - I can't recall if the Bugsplat report comes up, but the error log doesn't list anything unusual.
I've seen this occur in all game modes, including watching a reply. I have tried re-watching that same replay to see if I could cause it to re-occur, hopping to add a little order to this randomness, but I have been unsuccessful. Although, I have only watched that replay 3 times.
I have Windows 7, an AMD Radeon HD 6900, 3.3ghz quad core processor (note: vanilla DoW2 had issues with multi-core processors), 8GB RAM and an on-board Realtek sound card. God knows what it is, DXDiag just gives it a description of "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)".
Updating drivers have thus far proved unsuccessful.
I also have a 5.1 surround sound setup with the Windows settings of "Speaker fill" and "Swap center/subwoofer" enabled. However, the sound crash still occurs with these 2 setting disabled.
Currently, my in-game sound options list everything as max. That's max quality and max number of sounds. Changing the in-game options for reverb and speaker configuration have also had no effect.

Download any program that allows you to clock your graphic card and underclock it a little.
And let me know how that goes.
