I wanted to share an idea I posted on the Steam forums shortly after DoW3 was announced. Now that we have official DoW3 forums, I believe it belongs here instead. What follows is a copy-paste. I really love DoW2's Last Stand mode, and would love to see it in DoW3 in one form or another. What I propose is a different type of Last Stand.
This is an idea that came to me some time ago, and now that we have more details about DoW3, I though it was worth its own topic.
The basis of the idea is the following: instead of controlling a single character, each player controls their faction in the usual way, building a base and an army.
Maps would be much, much bigger, and as such battles would be massive. A team of players must defend a central area by building a veritable fortress within it, and an army to fight with.
The central area is large enough to allow 1 HQ per player, as well as some resource sites, barracks&factories, and defensive structures (turrets, bunkers, walls...). However, space, resources and time are limited when compared to regular MP battles, so players must plan their strategy accordingly, as well as how each one will build their base. You could think of it as "Outpost Defense".
After a short preparation, first wave arrives. We're talking about a true army per wave, plus the armies of each player, plus the eventual Titan-sized units. The closest comparison I can find are the Apocalypse battles of the tabletop game.
Each wave is larger and more advanced than the first one, but with each successful wave, players can research better tech (must choose a tech) and have some spare time to rebuild their base and army. The objective would be to defend all the HQ buildings: when one is destroyed, that player is gone, and when all are dead, they lose.
I can picture lots of sub-gamemodes for this.
- Thematical: battles of Maccragge and Armageddon, anyone?
- Until the End: no wave limit, just see how long you can survive.
- Extraction: survive for a set number of waves until your armies can be extracted by reinforcements.
- Same enemy/mixed enemy: choos between fighting a single faction on all waves, or have a mixed thing like in DoW2's Last Stand.
- Save Material/Civilians: send your armies outside your fortress to recover war material or civilians, escort them back to base, and get them off the planet to win.
I think such a game mode would increase the replayablity of the game by a great margin, keep it running for years like DoW2's Last Stand, allow for much bigger battles, and add the base building DoW3 seems to be focused on.
